René Descartes
1596 to 1650
French mathematician and philosopher who served as a gentleman soldier, lived for about twenty years in the Dutch Republic and moved house often to be left alone. He gave geometry its coordinates, wrote on optics and physiology, and set the agenda for modern philosophy by doubting everything and seeing what was left. He died in Stockholm, tutoring a queen at five in the morning.
