Ludwig Wittgenstein
1889 to 1951
Born into one of the richest families in Vienna, he studied engineering in Manchester before turning up at Cambridge to argue with Bertrand Russell. He wrote the Tractatus as a soldier, gave away his fortune, taught primary school, designed a house for his sister and went back to Cambridge to take his own book apart. It was the only book of philosophy he published.
